The proceedings of the final event presenting the results of the REMOTE-IT program within the framework of URBACT IV took place on Friday, December 12, 2025, at the Marina café in the Venetian Harbor of Heraklion.
The Municipality of Heraklion is the only Municipality in Greece participating in the European Program “Remote and Hybrid Work for Thriving Cities – REMOTE-IT”, which is implemented within the framework of URBACT IV.
The Transnational Working Meeting and Transnational Conference within the framework of the European Program URBACT IV – REMOTE IT European Program on the theme: "Remote and Hybrid Work for Thriving Cities – REMOTE IT."
The 7th meeting of the Local Action Group was successfully held on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, at the Youth Center of the Municipality of Heraklion.
In recent years, Greece has been making a strong entry onto the map of digital nomads. The special visa (Digital Nomad Visa) introduced in 2021, improved infrastructure in major cities and islands, and local hospitality initiatives have made the country one of the most attractive options for remote workers.
The Municipality of Heraklion is one of the eight partners in URBACT's project "Remote-IT". Remote-IT network tackles the new challenges cities are experiencing connected to the future of work.
The Urbact Local Group, after identifying the reasons that make Heraklion unattractive for digital nomads, defined the characteristics that would enhance its image and characteristics as a digital destination.
The Urbact Local Group studied the characteristics of the city of Heraklion through a constructive dialogue with all its members having an active role, making their suggestions and analyzing with arguments the reasons why Heraklion is not currently an attractive destination for digital nomads.
The main question the Urbact Local Group was asked to answer is "why Heraklion is not an attractive destination for Digital Nomads".
The main objective of the REMOTE-IT network is understanding and solving the challenges of the future of work in urban areas, especially the impact and interrelationship of digital nomadism, hybrid work and remote work on urban development.
